This webinar is designed to guide health care professionals and organizations in creating more inclusive, accepting environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) patients. The webinar will cover basic LGBTQ terminology, history, myths and stereotypes, and discuss barriers facing the LGBTQ community. Participants will learn actionable steps to take to be more LGBTQ-inclusive and changes that can create a more-inclusive organization.
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Create a plan to guide health care workers to be more inclusive of LGBTQ people in the work environment.
- Determine barriers to inclusive health care, specifically as it relates to the transgender population.
- Identify the legal landscape and how it impacts LGBTQ patients receiving care.
- Explain the differences between sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
Max Mowitz is a program director with One Iowa and a sexual assault victim advocate with Polk County Crisis and Advocacy. In these roles, Mowitz works in the areas of trauma informed care, sexual violence and assault, mental health, intersecting oppressions related to race, gender identity and sexual orientation, and LGBTQIA-inclusive birth work. Mowitz also works with the transgender and nonbinary communities. Mowitz is a graduate of the One Iowa LGBTQ Leadership Institute and a volunteer at Transformative Healing. Mowitz is pursuing doula certification with a focus on LGBTQIA-specific births and a master’s degree in social work at the University of Iowa.

Registration for a member facility is $150. Fees are per connection at a facility and include electronic handout and one connection line to the live webinar. Connection instructions and handout materials will be emailed to the contact person listed on the registration 1-2 days prior to the program.
