The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has extended the deadline for consumers to sign up for marketplace health care coverage.

Because of the extraordinary volume of consumers contacting HHS’ call center or visiting HealthCare.gov, the agency has extended the deadline to sign up for Jan. 1 Coverage to Monday, Dec. 19.

HHS says hundreds of thousands of Americans have selected plans over the last few days, and nearly a million consumers have left their contact information to hold their place in line at the call center. The agency’s goal is to provide affordable coverage to everyone seeking it before the deadline, and officials say the additional days will give consumers an opportunity to come back and complete their enrollments.
