Senate confirms Price as HHS secretary

The U.S. Senate early Friday confirmed Rep. Tom Price, R-Georgia, to be the next secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Senators voted along party lines, 52 to 47.

Price, a 62-year-old retired orthopedic surgeon, is expected to implement the repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act. As chairman of the House Budget Committee, Price has opposed the act known as Obamacare and helped draft several bills to replace it.

Price was first elected to represent Georgia’s 6th district in November 2004. He earlier served four terms in the Georgia State Senate, two as Minority Whip and rose in 2002 to become the first Republican Senate Majority Leader in the history of Georgia.
