New Medicare Cards

CMS is removing Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from Medicare cards to help fight identity theft and safeguard taxpayer dollars.

Providers must be ready by April 1, 2018, for the change from a SSN based claim number to a randomly generated Medicare Beneficiary Number (the new Medicare number). Moving forward, CMS will be referring to this change initiative as the “New Medicare Card.”

A new home page has been created to help providers advise Medicare beneficiaries of the change. A separate webpage addresses frequently asked questions for providers.
