MACRA episode-based cost measures field testing project

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and its contractor, Acumen, LLC, are conducting a field test for eight episode-based cost measures before possible use in the Quality Payment Program (QPP) cost performance category of the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS).

There are two National Provider Calls scheduled. The goal of the National Provider Calls is to provide detailed information about the MACRA Episode-Based Cost Measures Field Testing. The presentation will provide information on the field study project including content of the field test reports and information on the supplemental documentation posted on the MACRA Page as of October 16, 2017. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session, where stakeholders will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on measure development activities and field testing.

In addition, all stakeholders will be able to view a mock report and supplemental documentation on the measures that will be publicly posted. We will be seeking feedback from all stakeholders on the measures, confidential or mock report, and supplemental documentation through an online survey, which will be open from October 16 to November 15. To participate in the field testing, we encourage you to review the field test reports and submit feedback through the online survey.

Field testing will take place from October 16 through November 15, 2017. During this time, clinicians (TIN-NPIs) and clinician groups (TINs) who are attributed at least 10 episodes for one or more measures will have the opportunity to view a confidential report with information about their cost measure performance.  The following episode-based cost measures will be reported to clinicians and clinician groups who meet a 10-episode case minimum for at least one episode group during the measurement period June 1, 2016, through May 31, 2017:

  • Elective Outpatient Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)
  • Knee Arthroplasty
  • Revascularization for Lower Extremity Chronic Critical Limb Ischemia
  • Routine Cataract Removal with Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implantation
  • Screening/Surveillance Colonoscopy
  • Intracranial Hemorrhage or Cerebral Infarction
  • Simple Pneumonia with Hospitalization
