The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) started mailing new Medicare cards this week to people with Medicare who live in South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and six other midwestern states. The new cards are being distributed in a series of mailings based on geographic location.
The new cards include a unique Medicare number in lieu of the enrollee’s Social security number as a way to prevent fraud, fight identity theft and keep tax dollars safe. CMS must distribute new cards to all people with Medicare by April 2019.
