The Prescription Opioid Abuse Advisory Committee, which was developed as a result of a grant South Dakota received in 2016 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), met on July 19 in Pierre. Updates were provided on current funding source activities, as well as the strategic plan. The committee discussed future priorities and projects that should be considered, particularly for the State Opioid Response (SOR) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant that is due in August.
As part of the funding dollars received by South Dakota, the Department of Social Services and the Department of Health created the website www.AvoidOpioidSD.com. Resources and information are currently located on the website with plans to grow the content.
The advisory committee will continue to meet as grant dollars are being provided on a national level to combat the opioid epidemic.
