Customer privacy on a key Obamacare enrollment portal, HealthCare.gov, was hacked in the past week, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
CMS said that about 75,000 individuals’ files were improperly accessed using the direct enrollment pathway for insurance brokers and agents through the federally run exchanges. Irregular activity was first detected Oct. 13 and CMS formally declared a breach on Oct. 16.
The portal remains online and can be accessed, although CMS has temporarily disabled brokers’ direct enrollment pathway while it works to implement new security measures. CMS is working to identify potentially impacted individuals so they can be notified.
