Monument Health Sturgis Hospital and Clinic: SDAHO’s Next Hometown Healthcare Hero Member Facility

Congratulations to this month’s SDAHO Hometown Healthcare Heroes recipient, Monument Health Sturgis Hospital and Clinic located in Sturgis, South Dakota.

To help member facilities with workforce needs, SDAHO launched the Hometown Healthcare Heroes campaign. This storytelling campaign is designed to recognize career opportunities at member facilities and celebrate the people that work there and the communities they live in.

Monument Health Sturgis Hospital and Clinic is in Sturgis, South Dakota, located in the northern Black Hills of the Rushmore state.  This unique health care facility sits in a town with a population of just over seven thousand people, the services it offers is more like those from a bigger health care facility. Maija Janes is a registered nurse with Monument Health Sturgis Hospital, “I enjoy coming to work, I love it. My co-workers are great, and I love the teamwork we have here. Everyone here is so helpful; they always have my back if I need it. The leadership is awesome, I love my job.” Maija Janes, RN, Monument Health Sturgis

The team dynamic within Monument Health Sturgis Hospital is a mix of veteran and newer healthcare professionals, including many born and raised in the area and others moving to Sturgis from other parts of the country. “We love newcomers because the more we can train new people the better the staff and team we will have. We have a critical access hospital in a rural community, so we must have each other’s back and we do.”  Maija Janes, RN, Monument Health Sturgis

Andrea Casteel moved to Sturgis from North Dakota and enjoys the small town atmosphere, both at work and at home. “Everyone is so friendly here. I say hi to everyone, we all know each other’s names here at work. It’s a small town so you get more personalized healthcare, so as a patient your doctor really knows you.  Also, it’s a small commute whether you want to go to grocery store or take your kids to school. I live just 3 blocks from the hospital, which is awesome.” Andrea Casteel, RN, Monument Health Sturgis
