Last Session of the 2023 SDAHO Nurse Leadership Program

The SDAHO Nurse Leadership program consists of 10 customized sessions designed to equip acute and post acute care nurse leaders with leadership and operational skills they need to be a successful and supportive leader in their organization.

The SDAHO Nurse Leadership program is for current and emerging nurse leaders within acute, post acute, and clinic settings. In this year’s program, we had participants from Madison to Mobridge, Sturgis to Yankton, Burke to Ft. Meade…just to name a few. The roles of the participants varied too, Nurse Manager, Associate Chief Nurse, Director of Nursing, Infusion Coordinator, RN Education Consultant, and Quality.

Over the past 9 sessions, the program participants had the opportunity to:

  • Enhance their critical communication skills while fostering relationships in the workplace
  • Discuss best practices in hiring and managing staffing needs while considering legal implications
  • Identify impacting revenues/expenses – particularly how nursing influences organizational decisions and patient outcomes
  • Attend SDAHO’s Post Acute Partners in Care Conference
  • and more!!

A few valuable concepts our participants are taking away from the program include:

  • (Legal Aspects of HR session) It was great to review best practices for interviewing potential prospects, as I will be doing more of this in the near future.
  • (Healthcare Finance session) Understanding what a budget workbook looks like and how to read it.
  • (Advocacy session) Nursing can impact legislation in SD.
  • (Crucial Conversations sessions) Realizing that intent might be misunderstood and how to redirect so that intent is clear.
  • (Innovative Leadership session) I liked the influencer assessment. I feel that will be useful in my role
  • (Healthcare Ethics) Advocating for the caregiver who has been injured from patient/family/visitor aggression and subsequent legal steps.

The tenth session consists of attending SDAHO’s Annual Conference. The participants will choose from the various sessions to best meet their professional growth and organizational needs. To help pull all learning aspects of the program together, the participants have been working on their independent study project, which will be submitted by October 13.

If you are interested in participating in next year’s program, registration will open in October. We hope you will be able to join!
