The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) is partnering with Dr. Jennifer Tinguely, Chief Medical Officer of Falls Community Health for the association’s upcoming ED Toolkit office hour sessions.
Two separate, unique 30-minute virtual sessions are scheduled, with the focus on Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). MAT is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies which is effective in the treatment of opioid use disorders and can help some people to sustain recovery. Despite the successes of MAT, just 1 in 5 patients receive medication for substance use disorder. According to the deputy director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “More than 80,000 people are dying of drug overdose involving an opioid every year, while safe and effective medicines are sitting on the shelf unused.”
SDAHO’s Quality Integration team continue to work with members on the ED Toolkit. The ED toolkit is an interactive guide for providers and hospital administrators. It provides strategies to incorporate best practices for screening and diagnosis, referral to treatment, safe prescribing, and community resources in various healthcare and non-healthcare settings. Its content was developed with considerations for rural and urban hospitals. the work has recently been expanded to clinics as well. It is titled ED Provider Toolkit, but the resources are applicable for most facility types.
Dr. Tinguely’s upcoming (MAT) Office Hours sessions will give participants the opportunity to ask questions of and receive guidance from Dr. Tinguely. Dr. Tinguely has extensive experience in MAT treatment and prescribes medication daily to patients to help in their recovery from opioid use disorders.
Pharmacists, Nurses and Providers may find this opportunity beneficial, however SDAHO invites all to attend one or both sessions to learn more about MAT. Click the links below to register.
