Thursday marked week 6 of this year’s South Dakota Legislative session. So far we have seen healthcare-related legislation moving in a positive direction this session. Last week several bills that SDAHO is supporting made it to the Governor’s desk, with a few already signed.
- HB 1012 – adopt the interstate counseling licensure compact and revise educational requirements to comply with the compact. Signed by Governor 2/13/24.
- HB 1017– adopt the psychology interjurisdictional licensure compact. Signed by the Governor 2/12/24.
Other bills that SDAHO is publicly supporting that are smoothly moving through the process, include SB 44, which will make an appropriation to reimburse health care professionals who have complied with the requirements for health care recruitment assistance programs. The measure passed through the Senate and House of Representatives with little opposition. It is on the Governor’s desk waiting to be signed. HB 1147, addressing discriminatory acts against entities participating in a 340B drug pricing program has also passed the House of Representatives with no opposition. It is now scheduled to be heard in Senate Health and Human Services at a later date.
HB 1014, which would amend the criteria for the designation of a regional nursing facility and applicable reimbursement was defeated in committee when it was deferred to the 41st legislative day on a 7-2 vote. SDAHO was supporting the measure and is disappointed it did not make it to the finish line, however we will continue to monitor the idea moving forward.
This week is the seventh week of the 2024 legislative session and Wednesday February 21 is Crossover Day. That means all bills must be heard and pass through their house of origin.
