This past week was a good week for healthcare at the 2024 South Dakota Legislature. Several measures that SDAHO is actively supporting or monitoring this session have been signed by the Governor into law. With two weeks left in session, there are a few bills that we are closely following. SB 80 will improve technology equipment for providers of elderly care. The measure does have an emergency clause, which means it will go into effect immediately if signed by our Governor rather than waiting until the normal implementation date of July 1st.  The measure was amended by the Joint committee on appropriations, lowering the appropriated dollar amount from $5 million to $3 million. Our advocacy team testified on this bill Thursday, with final action from the committee expected soon.
SB 147 which will provide for the distribution of informational materials regarding palliative care, was heard in the House Health and Human Services committee and received a unanimous do pass motion. It was then placed on the consent calendar.  SDAHO’s Michele Snyders, our Hospice and Palliative Care Program Manager, testified in support of the measure. Michele shared with the committee her professional experience working with Palliative Care practices, but she also shared her personal story as a Palliative Care Patient. On the House Side, we are pleased to see HB 1147 moving through the process with no opposition. This measure addresses discriminatory acts against entities participating in a 340B drug pricing program. SDAHO has testified in support of the measure. It passed the Senate Health and Human Services Committee this week unanimously as well as the full senate. Its next stop is the Governor’s desk.
There are two weeks left in this year’s session, with many vehicle bills expected to be heard starting in week 8. The SDAHO advocacy team will remain in Pierre lifting up the issues important to our members and speaking out as needed.
