September is National Suicide Prevention Month. It’s a time to remember the lives lost to suicide and to acknowledge the millions more who have experienced suicidal thoughts. We also recognize the impact of suicide on individuals, families, and communities. This month is an opportunity to raise awareness about suicide prevention and to share messages of hope. Throughout September, and all year long, we can advocate for suicide prevention, engage with our communities, be informed by data and research, and work together with others to address this public health issue that has affected millions of Americans. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has several resources to learn the warning signs and risk factors for suicide, how to support someone considering suicide, and information on the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
On September 17, SDAHO and the 211 Helpline Center will offer training on Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR). This training teaches three simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. All SDAHO members can register for no additional fee. Click here to reserve your spot.
