Grant Spotlight: October 2024

At the recent SDAHO Annual Convention in Rapid City, Michelle Hoffman, SD Flex Coordinator and SDAHO’s Becky Heisinger, Director of Quality Integration spoke on the challenges facing solo grant managers and provided strategies to overcome obstacles.  When it comes to preparing a grant application, key strategies discussed included having a clear understanding of the funding need, leadership buy in and ensuring that the facility is grant readiness.

Other takeaways from the session included strategies for managing the grant once awarded. Key elements to successful post award management include use of templates, anticipating delays, challenges and proactively responding to resolve, and developing trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

The session ended with a glance at the revised Uniform Grant Guidance (UGG) that went in effect on 10/1/24 for new federal awards. A few of the highlights include the increase audit threshold from $750,000 to $1,000,000 and that administrative costs associated with closeout are allowable. Educational opportunities:

Health Research Services Administration (HRSA) is hosting several webinars regarding their community-based grant programs that are forecasted to be released in the fiscal year 2025.  The training will provide the purpose of each grant program, core elements and key requirements to address in the application, annual award amount and number of years of support, when the funding opportunity is forecast to be released, and how many awards are forecast to be made. HRSA’s new Deputy Regional Administrator, Darci Granda will conduct the training. Darci joins the Regional Office having spent 10 years at HRSA in certain roles, including the last three years with HRSA’s Provider Relief Bureau where she worked with law enforcement entities to oversee COVID-19 funding. During a break in federal service, Darci was Managing Director for a consulting firm in Washington, D.C., assisting healthcare clients access over $10 million in federal funding.
