Designing the Future of Healthcare
At CMBA Architects, people are at the heart of every project. Our team’s genuine care for patients, staff, and visitors drives us to create healthcare environments that are not only functional but transformative.
Healing-Focused Design
Every space we design starts with the patient experience. We thoughtfully consider layouts, circulation, materials, and details to support privacy, safety, and healing. Angela McCaulley, AIA, a healthcare planner on our team, specializes in patient-centered planning, ensuring each design prioritizes comfort and dignity while meeting clinical demands.
At Spencer Hospital, Angela and our team reimagined key areas of the Emergency Department with patient safety and privacy at the forefront. An “on-stage, off-stage” circulation model reduces noise and activity near patient rooms, while expanded treatment spaces and trauma bays improve care delivery. A new ambulance garage and direct site connections enhance emergency transfers and safety.
Empowering Care Teams
Exceptional care starts with a supportive workplace. By listening to nurses, providers, and staff, we design environments that improve workflow, safety, and care delivery. Adam Wheelock, AIA, a healthcare architect, specializes in operational flow and partners with care teams to translate frontline feedback into effective, efficient design solutions.
At Floyd Valley Healthcare, Adam and our team expanded the infusion center with private rooms and clear staff sightlines to enhance safety and patient care. The relocated OB department features larger LDRP rooms with integrated care zones, streamlining workflow and elevating the patient and family experience. For the clinic renovations, the team preserved the popular service/pod model — maintaining easy patient access to providers and efficient staff operations with minimal disruption.
Creating Welcoming Spaces
Visitors are essential to healing, and we design environments that help them feel at ease. Cathy Koch, an Interior Designer, focuses on creating warm, intuitive, and accessible spaces that reduce stress for patients and families alike.
At Stewart Memorial Community Hospital, Cathy helped enhance the visitor experience with clear wayfinding, abundant natural light, and inviting gathering spaces that feel like home.
With offices across Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota, our team is passionate about shaping environments that support patients, empower staff, engage communities, and elevate the future of healthcare.
