The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) successfully hosted its annual Rural Health Leaders Conference in Fort Pierre, June 25–26, 2025. The in-person, two half-day event brought together healthcare professionals from across the state for robust discussions centered on South Dakota’s rural healthcare challenges, innovative solutions, and future opportunities.
Attendees explored key topics including state and federal advocacy updates, cybersecurity, EMS workforce strategies, mental health, leadership, communication, and Medicaid fraud.
Michella Sybesma, SDAHO’s Vice President of Education and Communication, reflected on the event’s success:
“SDAHO has proudly hosted this conference since 2017, and each year we are incredibly grateful for those who join us. A big thank you to our sponsors who help make this event possible, and to all the presenters who shared valuable insights and resources with our attendees.”

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden opened the conference with remarks celebrating the resilience of rural communities and the dedication of health care professionals who serve them. He thanked attendees for their continued commitment to delivering high-quality care across the state.
This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. David Schreiner, Ph.D.—author and leadership expert—delivered an inspiring presentation titled Be the Best Part of Their Day: Supercharging Communication with Values-Driven Leadership.
The agenda featured both state and national experts, including an advocacy update led by SDAHO President and CEO Tim Rave, along with Jacob Parsons, Director of Advocacy and Reimbursement. A pre-conference session, hosted by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), focused on Navigating Key Legislative Issues.
Timely and engaging panel discussions included:
- The Cybersecurity Threat Landscape and its Impact on Health Care
- EMS in South Dakota: Future Strategies and Building the Next Generation of Paramedics
- Sustainable Strategies to Support Well-Being for Healthcare Professionals (ACHE)
The conference concluded with a compelling presentation by Amanda Miiller, South Dakota’s Deputy Attorney General. Her session, A Peek Behind the Curtain of the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, provided critical insight into efforts to combat Medicaid fraud and protect health care resources within the state.
Looking ahead, registration for SDAHO’s 2025 Annual Convention opens July 1. This year’s theme, Celebrating Medical Marvels – 99 Years & Beyond, will honor nearly a century of healthcare innovation and excellence in South Dakota.
