CMS announces “Digital Health Ecosystem” to Advance Data Sharing and Innovation

On July 30, CMS launched a new “digital health ecosystem” aimed at improving how health information is shared between patients and providers. The initiative includes partnerships with major tech companies—such as Amazon, Apple, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic—and introduces a voluntary interoperability framework for health data exchange.

Over 60 organizations, including payers, providers, and app developers, have pledged support and committed to meeting key goals by early 2026. The effort will enable secure digital identity credentials to access medical records and support tools like digital check-ins, chronic disease management apps, and AI assistants.

CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT previously sought input on the initiative in June 2025, with the AHA submitting recommendations.
