SDAHO Presents: 100 Years Young – A Century of Stories, Wisdom & Heart

Ruth Schmidt and her daughter Susan

The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) is thrilled to launch “100 Years Young” — a heartwarming video series that celebrates the incredible lives of South Dakota’s centenarians and the compassionate caregivers who support them.

These aren’t just stories about longevity — they’re stories about grit, love, history, and the health care teams who help make a vibrant, long life possible. Each episode takes you on a journey through the past 100+ years, highlighting the experiences of those who have truly lived through it all — with a little help from family, friends, and dedicated caregivers.

As SDAHO prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026, this series is a powerful reflection of the organization’s century-long commitment to supporting a unified voice across the healthcare continuum. “100 Years Young” not only honors those who have reached this remarkable milestone in life but also serves as a tribute to the health care professionals who have stood beside them every step of the way.

Meet Ruth Schmidt – A Century in the Making

Ruth Schmidt is living proof that age is just a number. At 100 years young, Ruth’s spirit is as sharp and lively as ever, and she has stories to prove it.

Born in the tiny town of Firesteel, South Dakota, Ruth’s life journey has taken her from the prairies of Isabel and Timber Lake to the bright lights of New York City. She’s worn many hats — courthouse worker, world traveler, wife, mom, and even elementary school teacher.

Ruth’s adventurous streak started early and hasn’t let up since. After attending Sioux Falls College and earning her secretarial degree, she headed west to California — and then east to New York — before eventually coming home to South Dakota to care for her mother and reunite with the love of her life.

These days, Ruth calls Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls home, where she continues to inspire those around her. Kaleb Groeneweg, Director of Resident Services and head of the Home Health team, has known Ruth for years. He and his team are part of the reason Ruth continues to thrive — combining attentive care with genuine friendship.

When asked about the best invention of the last 100 years? Ruth doesn’t hesitate: “Television.”

Her secret to a long life? “Keep moving, stay curious, and enjoy the ride.”
