USD medical school announces move to Sioux Falls

The University of South Dakota (USD) announced it will move the first 18 months of its Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program from Vermillion to Sioux Falls. The change, shared at an Aug. 14, press conference with state, city, and health care leaders, aims to give students earlier access to clinical faculty, enhance research opportunities, and improve residency competitiveness (University of South Dakota, 2025).

USD’s Division of Biomedical and Translational Sciences will also relocate, expanding collaboration between clinicians and researchers. Sanford Health will provide temporary facilities, with plans for a new permanent building within seven to ten years.

Over the past 50 years, 45% of USD’s M.D. graduates have returned to practice in South Dakota, and more than 75% of those completing a residency in-state have stayed. USD leaders say the move will strengthen this pipeline and bolster the state’s health care workforce.
