CDC Measles Preparedness and Response Toolkit

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a toolkit for health care facilities to support measles infection prevention and control actions in health care settings.

The Measles Assessment Tool (MAT) is designed to help healthcare facilities review measles prevention and response policies. The tool guides infection prevention and control (IPC) observations during a measles outbreak and helps facilities determine whether they can safely identify, isolate, and care for patients with measles.

The MAT is most effective when used proactively, allowing facilities to identify and address gaps in IPC policies before a measles case occurs, whether through importation or community transmission. Facilities can adapt policies based on the level of measles risk in their community or healthcare setting.

The assessment considers different facility types and units, following the potential path of a patient with suspected or confirmed measles—from entry to room placement—to identify opportunities for exposure. Recommended IPC practices, based on current CDC guidance, are highlighted throughout the assessment to support immediate feedback and improvement.

By using the MAT, facilities can enhance preparedness, safeguard patients and staff, and strengthen their overall infection prevention practices—not only for measles but potentially for other respiratory pathogens as well.
