Developing Nurse Leaders: Building Influence and Advocacy Across the Profession

The first 2026 SDAHO Nurse Leadership session kicked off in Fort Pierre, SD, setting the tone for the program focused on growth, communication, and collaboration. The session featured communication training using the Crucial Conversations curriculum, a dynamic framework that helps healthcare professionals navigate high-stakes discussions with confidence, empathy, and clarity. Participants embraced the opportunity to strengthen communication skills essential in today’s complex healthcare environment.

Following the first day of training, Senator Sydney Davis and House Representative Taylor Rehfeldt, both strong advocates for healthcare advancement in South Dakota, joined the participants for legislative social. The discussion emphasized the critical role nurses play not only as caregivers but also as influential voices in shaping health policies across local, state, and national levels. Senator Davis and House Representative Rehfeldt highlighted how nurse leaders can engage in advocacy, raise awareness of key bills, and actively contribute to creating laws that improve patient outcomes and support the nursing workforce.

The day was filled with meaningful discussions, thoughtful questions, and new professional connections – proof of the growing energy and dedication within South Dakota’s nursing leadership community.

Our next session, scheduled for February 18, will continue this momentum as we take a deep look at the South Dakota Board of Nursing & Center for Nursing Workforce and the AONL Nurse Leader Core Competencies. These discussions will help participants better understand the framework for leadership development and the expectations that define effective nurse leaders at every level of practice.

Developing nurse leaders is a lifelong journey.

As healthcare evolves, so must our ability to lead with integrity, advocate strategically, and inspire the next generation of nurses. SDAHO remains committed to fostering this growth through education, engagement and empowerment.
