Rural Health Transformation Project moves forward in South Dakota

The South Dakota Department of Health shares key details on website

Earlier this month, Governor Larry Rhoden signed HB 1044 into law, granting the South Dakota Department of Health spending authority for the Rural Health Transformation Project (RHTP). With this new law in place, the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) recognizes that developments are moving quickly—and our members have questions. The South Dakota Department of Health has begun sharing information outlining the initiative’s overview, key activities, partners and stakeholders, funding details, and expected outcomes. While SDAHO’s specific role in the RHTP is still being determined, we look forward to engaging as the initiative moves forward to support our members and South Dakota’s health care community. Below is the latest information from the Department of Health.

The South Dakota Office of Rural Health and Emergency Services is working on the initiative “Building a Sustainable Rural Healthcare Workforce”. This initiative strengthens the rural healthcare workforce through an incentive-based program that attracts, develops, and retains professionals across critical roles and care settings. By combining recruitment incentives such as sign-on bonuses, relocation assistance, and rural service stipends with education-focused supports like tuition assistance, paid clinical release time, and flexible training, the program ensures access to care in rural and frontier communities. Together, these strategies build a stable, skilled, and sustainable workforce. More information about this initiative can be found here.
