The Winter 2026 Trustee newsletter is now available

The Trustee Quarterly Newsletter for Winter 2026 is now available, with the planning for the year ahead and preparing your Board for success.

Each year, the American Hospital Association releases its Environmental Scan, highlighting key data and trends shaping health care. This special issue highlights key insights and also outlines critical questions for hospital and health systems boards as they prepare for the future. National trends point to growing challenges in trust, financial stability, workforce pressures, and technological advancement — all requiring thoughtful governance and proactive planning.

Boards are encouraged to reflect on the evolving hospital landscape, including how to build community trust through clear communication, prepare for continued shifts toward care at home, navigate value-based payment models, and strengthen quality and patient safety initiatives. Financial pressures remain significant, with concerns around federal debt, reimbursement shortfalls, rising expenses, cybersecurity risks, workplace violence, and increasing consumer costs impacting access to care.

Workforce sustainability is equally urgent. Key considerations include reducing turnover, strengthening education and pipeline partnerships, addressing burnout, fostering a culture of safety, and strategically leveraging AI to support recruitment and retention.

SDAHO’s Perspective: Planning for 2026 and Beyond

SDAHO began planning for 2026 more than a year ago, with leadership and the Board of Trustees closely evaluating national, state, and local trends. Our members — hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, home health, and hospice providers — continue to face complex and rapidly evolving challenges. Common priorities include workforce recruitment and retention, financial sustainability, innovation, and maintaining strong patient and community relationships.

To support these needs, SDAHO provides robust advocacy, weekly live and on-demand education, in-person networking opportunities, and strategic partnerships through SDAHO Enterprises. Recognizing that no two facilities are alike, our focus remains on delivering flexible, practical tools tailored to diverse provider settings.

A major opportunity shaping the future of rural health care is the Rural Health Transformation Fund. Signed into law through House Bill 1044, this initiative authorizes up to $402 million in federal funding over two years — one of the largest rural health investments in South Dakota history. The fund will support rural workforce recruitment and retention, facility modernization, expanded behavioral and maternal health services, improved technology and connectivity, and innovative care delivery models. Effective implementation will be critical to building sustainable, resilient rural health systems for decades to come.

As SDAHO approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, our mission remains steadfast: advancing healthy communities through a unified voice across the health care continuum. By planning strategically today, we are positioning South Dakota’s health care providers — and the communities they serve — for a stronger future.
