The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) received the following Health Alert Network (HAN) notification today (Thursday July 2, 2026) from State Epidemiologist Josh Clayton regarding the detection of a confirmed measles case in Edmunds County.
Healthcare providers, infection prevention teams, emergency departments, and clinical staff—particularly in the surrounding region—are encouraged to review the information below and remain vigilant for patients with potential measles exposure or symptoms. Awareness of Measles Detection in Edmunds County
Counties: Brown, Campbell, Edmunds, Faulk, McPherson, Potter, Spink, Walworth
Situation: Measles has been detected in a child from Edmunds County. The measles dashboard will be updated on Wednesday to reflect the new case.
The South Dakota Department of Health (SD-DOH) asks medical providers to be alert for patients with potential exposure to measles or patients presenting with measles symptoms (fever, cough, runny nose, or red, watery eyes). SD-DOH staff are available for consultation by calling 800-592-1861. Measles is a Category I disease which should be reported to SD-DOH immediately upon suspicion.
