Gov. Dennis Daugaard has called a special legislative session for Sept. 12 at the State Capitol in Pierre to consider legislation that will expedite the collection of state sales tax from online retail sellers. The special session is in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. allowing the state to collect and remit state sales tax from online retailers.
Daugaard expressed a desire to implement legislation that would enable tax changes as early as Oct. 1. Draft legislation is currently being prepared and will be made available for review prior to the special session.
