President signs opioid bill

President Trump on Oct. 24 signed into law a sweeping 660-page bipartisan opioid package, H.R. 6 (115), that bundles dozens of bills aimed at combating the opioid crisis.

The new law authorizes $8 billion in treatment grants and will expand access to medication-assisted treatment by allowing more providers to prescribe buprenorphine and letting states lift Medicaid restrictions on payments for inpatient substance abuse treatment. The bill also encourages doctors to do more to detect patients at risk of prescription opioid misuse and bolsters efforts to prevent illicit drug shipments.
