September is Suicide Prevention Month

September is nationally recognized as Suicide Prevention Month. All month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness.Ā Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, and it is the 9th leading cause of death in South Dakota.

To prevent suicide, we need to be able to talk about it openlyā€”without fear or shame. But how we talk about suicide matters. These conversations can be helpful or harmful.

Suicide-related messages must be conveyed in ways thatĀ support safety, help-seeking, and healing.
