CDC Strengthens COVID-19 Vaccine Recommendations for Pregnant Women

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or contemplating pregnancy to get vaccinated against COVID-19, citing new evidence of the shots’ safety in those populations. The updated guidance is based on a new analysis of data submitted through the CDC’s voluntary pregnancy registry in which participants answer questions about their pregnancy and health histories. It showed no increased risk for miscarriage among those who received one of the mRNA vaccines before 20 weeks of pregnancy compared to the expected miscarriage rate.

Pregnancy increases the risks of severe illness and hospitalization from COVID-19, but CDC data shows that only 23 percent of pregnant women had received at least one COVID vaccine dose during pregnancy as of July 31.

More information from the CDC is available here.
