Federal PDMP Requirements for Medicaid Prescribers

Effective October 1, 2021, prescribers must check the South Dakota Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) drug history of a Medicaid recipient being prescribed a controlled substance before the prescription is issued. Medicaid prescribers are required to comply with this requirement in accordance with Section 5042 of the United States SUPPORT Act.

In the case that a prescriber is not able to check the PDMP despite a good faith effort by the prescriber, the prescriber must document such good faith effort, including the reason(s) why the prescriber was not able to check the PDMP. Prescribers may be required to submit, upon request, such documentation to Medicaid.

Prescribers may access more information regarding the PDMP through the Department of Health, Board of Pharmacy.
