The Department of Health and Human Services Renews Public Health Emergency

The Department of Health and Human Services has renewed the COVID-19 public health emergency declaration for another 90 days effective Oct. 18. The extension will help hospitals and health systems combat COVID-19 in their communities.

Xavier Becerra, the Secretary of Health and Human Services renewed the declaration of the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) that was first declared on January 20, 2020.

The renewal of the PHE is effective until January 16, 2022.  Existing CMS 1135 Waivers, dated as of October 7, 2021, will remain in effect for the duration of the declared PHE.
