Do’s & Don’ts with Legal Marijuana & Your Workplace Drug Testing Policy

SDAHO hosted Jo McGuire, Executive Director of the National Drug and Alcohol Screening Association, where she described the value a workplace drug and alcohol policy provides to the company.  Jo walked the audience through each critical section of a basic policy, explaining why it matters, what questions they need to ask themselves, how they should use their policy to help create a culture of safety and what missteps to avoid.

Jo suggested considering the following when developing a drug-testing policy and procedure:

  • DO NOT implement a drug/alcohol testing program without a policy in place that has been communicated to your workforce
  • avoid “case-by-case” scenarios as a policy catch-all
  • use certified collections professionals
  • use the correct testing products
  • perform the right type of drug test
  • use an MRO
Other topics discussed during this session included ADA law and what it does not require, questions to answer when developing and reviewing your drug testing policies, and the importance of properly communicating the drug testing policies to all employees.  If you need further direction or guidance on drug testing policies, view the entire webinar here.
