August 9, 11am CT/10am MT | SD Attorney General Office Update: Elder Abuse and Mandatory Reporting (Presenter: Kimberly Zachrison, Assistant Attorney General Office of the South Dakota Attorney General) The people most likely to commit acts of elder abuse are family members, friends, and caregivers. We will explore elder abuse in the criminal justice system and how that relates to healthcare workers. We’ll look at risks of elder abuse to watch for. We’ll conclude with how to report acts of elder abuse as a mandatory reporter.

August 18, 12pm CT/11am MT | Mastering Difficult Conversations with Compassionate Confidence (Presenter: Lores Vlaminck, Lores Consulting) This session will define the need, challenges, and opportunities in facilitating difficult conversations. Lores will identify research-based tools helpful in convening the conversations.
August 23, 11am CT/10am MT | The Role of Guardianship & Conservatorship in Improving Patient Outcomes (Presenter: Jenny Schmidt, CEO, Black Hills Advocate) Gain a basic understanding of what guardianship/conservatorship is under the state laws of SD and learn what patients are qualified candidates to have a guardian/conservator. Jenny will review the court process to have a guardian/conservator appointed and share case studies with the group illustrating how guardianship/conservatorship helps patients, hospitals and facilities meet patient care goals. Lastly, she will share statewide resources for guardianship/conservatorship.
August 30, 12:30pm CT/11:30am MT | Developing and Sustaining a Successful Community Health Worker Workforce in South Dakota (Presenter: Ben Tiensvold, Community Outreach Coordinator, Community Health Worker Collaborative of South Dakota) The Community Health Worker Collaborative of South Dakota (CHWSD) will present information about past, present, and future work that was completed and is to be completed to develop a sustainable Community Health Worker (CHW) workforce in South Dakota. The CHWSD is a relatively new organization funded through the South Dakota Department of Health with the mission to promote, support, and sustain the CHW profession in South Dakota. The presentation will include an overview of the organization and the CHW profession, how organizations can implement CHWs within their workforce, and an overview of the CHWSD’s 3-year strategic plan. Information will also be presented regarding reimbursement models available to ensure CHW sustainability, as well as funding opportunities to start a CHW program.
