Nursing, medical and osteopathic examiners boards propose rule changes

The South Dakota Department of Health’s Joint Board of Nursing (BON) and the Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners (BMOE) intend to amend rules to improve the efficiency and operation of the joint boards.

The amended rules would provide clarification to the licensing process, update collaboration requirements to improve access to care, include reference to medical assistants and create a new article covering the medical assistants.

A public hearing for the proposed rules is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 8, 9 a.m. at First Dakota National Bank, 101 N. Main Ave., Sioux Falls. Written comments are due Sept. 3.

In a separate proposal, the Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners intends to amend rules to create standards for medical record documentation when prescribing opioids for chronic pain, remove restrictions related to the supervision of physician assistants and clarify continuing education requirements for genetic counselors.

That public hearing, also at First Dakota National Bank in Sioux Falls, is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. Written comments are due Sept. 3.
