Event Details

August 1 at 12:00pm CST/11:00am MST
Overview:

SDAHO partners with Dr. Craig Uthe from Sanford Health to provide details an educational session on CPOD.

Significant challenges exist in providing safe and adequate care to the patient with co-occurring chronic pain and opioid dependence. Establishing trust with and empowering this patient to be an active participant in their health is a difficult but necessary step. During this session, we will focus on making an accurate diagnosis of their medical condition and developing an appropriate treatment plan in response. We will also review the significant differences in Morphine Milligram Equivalent (MME) dosages associated with acute pain, post-op pain, and chronic pain.

Objectives:
  • Identify the three health conditions that should be addressed in every clinic encounter for patients with chronic pain & opioid dependence (CPOD).
  • Recognize the specific DSM-5 criteria for defining Opioid Dependence, Opioid Use Disorders, and Addiction.
  • Be familiar with clinical challenges in caring for patients with CPOD, providing adequate pain relief and appropriate opioid prescribing.
  • Understand the differences in opioid prescribing recommendations for patients with acute pain, post-op pain, and chronic pain.
