General Reimbursement Basics for Hospitals

Health care finance is complicated. This is a true statement for even experienced financial professionals. Department leaders in hospitals are called upon to provide technical as well as financial leadership in their departments. Unfortunately, they are often not provided the tools necessary to understand reimbursement theory of how they are paid for their services. This session will provide a basic level of understanding of how health care finance and reimbursement works.

• Explore strategies that department leaders can utilize to improve their financial leadership.

Brian Bertsch has more than 28 years of experience assisting critical access hospitals, PPS hospitals and other rural providers improve their financial stability. His primary focus is healthcare consulting working with hospitals on Medicare and Medicaid rules and regulations, preparation and review of Medicare cost reports, chargemaster/cost report reviews, market pricing analysis, and other financial improvement analyses. Brian also provides education to staff, board members and constituents on Medicare reimbursement issues.
