IHI and NPSF to merge

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) have agreed to merge, effective May 1.

In a joint new release, IHI President and CEO Derek Feeley and NPSF President and CEO Tejal Gandhi said health care systems must maintain a sharp focus on safety for their patients and workforces, even as new challenges such as value-based care demand attention. They said a combined organization can help chart that path and re-energize the safety agenda. The CEOs said both organizations are promoting fresh approaches, including a new Call to Action from NPSF that frames safety as an urgent public health crisis.

Feeley will lead the combined organization. The merged patient safety teams, to be led by Gandhi, will combine existing NPSF and IHI patient safety programs and reflect an enhanced commitment to achieve patient safety around the world.

The announcement was made in conjunction with Patient Safety Awareness Week.
