‘Being Mortal’ event encourages communication about end-of-life care

Avera eLTC and the Good Samaritan Society are sponsoring an event to encourage people to overcome obstacles to identifying and communicating their wishes for end-of-life care.

The “Being Mortal” event, planned for 3-5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the Sr. Colman Room of Avera’s Prairie Center, uses the PBS Frontline film to help identify common barrier to effective conversations about end of life goals during serious illness and approaches for overcoming them.

“Being Mortal” follows Dr. Atul Gawande, a renowned writer and Boston surgeon, as he thinks about death and dying in the context of being a healer and shares stories about experiences at the end of life from patients and his own family.
