The workforce housing shortage legislative interim summer committee met in Pierre Tuesday to hear from community leaders across our state to discuss workforce housing issues confronting South Dakota communities.
The community leaders came together to share different approaches and challenges to creating and sustaining affordable housing. It is early in the process, but the committee discussed a number of possibilities to help rural communities provide housing for their workforce:
- Include workforce housing in revolving loan programs
- Create incentives to help rural communities finance housing
- Work with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) to incentivize workforce housing programs
The committee will synthesize all of the information provided by local communities and meet in July to further its efforts.
