The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will start mailing new Medicare identification cards to beneficiaries starting in April to comply with a requirement that Social Security numbers be replaced by a unique Medicare number by April 2019.
Approximately 60 million beneficiaries will receive a new card as part of seven “waves” of mailings which will take place based on geographic location. South Dakota is included in the third wave of mailings with the cards scheduled to be mailed sometime after June 2018.
