State Medicaid program to include substance abuse treatment

Members of South Dakota Legislative Rules Review Committee voted 3-2 this week to include substance abuse treatment as a covered Medicaid service. Up to this point, treatment services were limited to pregnant women and adolescents.

Rep. Jean Hunhoff (R-Yankton), Sen. Craig Kennedy (D-Yankton) and Sen. Alan Solano (R-Rapid City) voted to support the broader substance abuse services, while Rep. Steven Haugaard (R-Sioux Falls) and Sen. Lance Russell (R-Hot Springs) opposed the measure.

The changes will take effect later this month. Click here to read more from a story in the Rapid City Journal.
