First flu death of the season reported in South Dakota

The South Dakota Department of Health has reported the first death from influenza in South Dakota for the 2018-2019 flu season. The person who died was in the 60-to-69 age group and lived in Pennington County.

State epidemiologist Dr. Joshua Clayton said flu activity in South Dakota is currently classified as sporadic with 35 lab-confirmed cases and eight flu-related hospitalizations.

People who have not yet received a flu vaccination are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
