Pierre Rural Family Medicine Residency Program to Start in September

The South Dakota State Legislature approved funding for the Pierre Rural Family Medicine Residency program (PRFMR), the program is overseen by the Center for Family Medicine (CFM), a nonprofit educational corporation founded by both Avera and Sanford Health more than 40 years ago. The Pierre Rural Family Medicine Residency program will join CFM’s existing Sioux Falls Family Medicine Residency program.

The PRFMR will prepare physicians for practice in South Dakota and other areas of the mostly rural upper Midwest. The PRFMR is on schedule to launch early September, with its resident physicians seeing patients at both Sanford Health Pierre Clinic and Avera St. Mary’s Hospital. The PRFMR first resident physicians include Dr. Abigail Serpan, MD, and Dr. Gene Campbell, MD.
