Dr. Mary Nettleman, Dean of Sanford School of Medicine on Jan. 27 addressed the Joint Committee on Appropriations about the FY2021 budget items and updates on the School of Medicine Programs.
Highlights:
School of Health Sciences: New building impact, creating a contemporary space that accommodates additional students, increasing enrollment, expanding programs. Projected Enrollment Growth:

Sanford School of Medicine: The family medicine residency program in Pierre is fully operational with two residents. Residents do their first year in Sioux Falls and their final two years in Pierre. The next class will enter later this year with four residents in Pierre. The Frontier and Rural Medicine Program has eleven medical students train for nine months in a rural area – sites include Milbank, Mobridge, Parkston, Pierre, Spearfish, Vermillion, and Winner.
Dr. Nettleman announced her retirement as dean of the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. She’ll retire in July after serving as dean for eight years.
