South Dakota Medicaid – Out of State Transfer Prior Authorization Process Change

The SD Department of Social Services (DSS) issued a Memorandum on COVID-19 Out of State Transfer Authorization Process.

Acute Hospitals

Due to COVID-19 South Dakota Medicaid has implemented temporary changes to the prior authorization process for out of state transfers. No authorization is needed for transfers to South Dakota hospitals, Bismarck North Dakota, or hospitals within 50 miles of the South Dakota border. An expedited authorization may be granted for out of state transfers outside of the automatically authorized areas.

Out of State Swingbed and Nursing Facility Placement Process due to COVID-19

No prior authorization from SD Medicaid is needed for hospital discharge to swingbed and nursing facilities located within South Dakota’s borders. Providers should follow regular discharge processes, including Preadmission Screening and Resident Review (PASRR) process. Authorization from the Department of Human Services Division of Long Term Services and Supports is required for placement to facilities outside of South Dakota.
