CMS Issues Guidance to States to Resume Nursing Home Surveys

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a new memo (QSO-20-35-ALL) August 17 revising guidance on the expansion of survey activities to authorize onsite revisits and other survey types. CMS is asking for resolution of enforcement cases, expansion of desk review authority and the re-prioritization of routine Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) survey activities.
States will resume performing the following surveys:
  • Onsite revisits as specified in the revisit policy in the State Operations Manual (SOM), Chapter 7, Section 7317.2, for surveys with end dates on or after June 1, 2020
  • Complaint investigations that are triaged as Non-Immediate Jeopardy Medium
  • Annual recertification surveys required to be conducted within 15 months from a provider’s last recertification survey.
