April is Donate Life month

Did you know that as of February 2021 the number of patients on the national transplant waiting list was more than 107,000 and that every nine minutes, another person is added to the list?  April is Donate Life month; by donating your organs, you could save as many as 8 lives, by donating your cornea, you could restore sight to 2 people, and by donating your tissue, you could heal as many as 75 people.

You can also donate some organs and tissue while alive, these include; one of your kidneys, one liver lobe, one lung or partial lung, part of your pancreas or intestine, bone, blood, skin, amnion, and healthy cells from bone marrow and umbilical cord blood.health app

Sign up online through your state registry or in person at your local motor vehicle department. If you have an iPhone, you can use the Health app. It sends your information to a national computer system. Then after you sign up, talk to your family and let them know your decision. This will help them, if the time comes, to help carry out your wishes.

Also in April is Living Donor Day on April 6. This a national day to celebrate all living donors for their lifesaving generosity!

And don’t forget to participate in the Blue and Green day on April 22! On National Donate Life Blue & Green Day, the public is encouraged to wear blue and green and to engage in sharing the Donate Life message and promoting the importance of registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor.

Please refer to Donate Life America for additional resources and information.
