To help member facilities with workforce needs, SDAHO has launched the Hometown Healthcare Heroes campaign. The campaign is designed to recognize and celebrate member facilities, the people that work there and the communities they live in, while recognizing and promoting job opportunities within member facilities. This week we continue to celebrate Pioneer Memorial Hospital and Health Services by lifting up the community where it resides, Viborg South Dakota.
Viborg, South Dakota is in Turner County in the southeast corner of the Rushmore state. With a population less than one-thousand people, Viborg is considered a rural community. Those who work and live in this Danish known small town will tell you, regardless of its size it’s a complete community offering its residents everything they need from amenities to healthcare. Melanie Parsons was born and raised in Viborg. She is the CEO of Parsons Insurance Agency and is the Board President for the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Board. “There is hardly any volunteer organization in our community that doesn’t include someone from the hospital, they are not only workers, but they are so involved in giving back to the community.” Parsons wants potential future residents of Viborg and employees of Pioneer Memorial to know, “the hospital is not only the largest employer in Viborg, but they offer excellent benefits, good working conditions, incentives, bonuses and more.”
Viborg is unique because of the large number of services it offers its residents such as, shopping, entertainment, restaurants, museums, yearly events and more. “A lot of smaller towns don’t have as many of those things available, especially healthcare, attorneys, grocery stores and more.” A new housing development is also underway offering residents’ new construction homes, with housing lots available to purchase.
