SDAHO Celebrates Monument Health Custer Hospital: Learn More About Job Opportunities From Nurse Manager Debra Risser

Monument Health Custer Hospital and Clinic is a member facility featured in the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations, Hometown Healthcare hero campaign for the month of October. To help member facilities with workforce needs, SDAHO launched this storytelling campaign designed to recognize career opportunities and celebrate the people that work there and the communities they live.
Monument Health Custer Hospital is a critical access hospital that offers 24-hour emergency services, inpatient and outpatient care options, a clinic, hospice and assisted living facility. Monument Health Custer Hospital and Clinic has 66 nursing and nurse aide caregivers, 12 inpatient beds, 5 emergency department beds, 3 infusing rooms and 6 physicians. Debra Risser is the Nurse Manager for Monument Health Custer Hospital. She is originally from Iowa but relocated to the Black Hills in 2012. In 2020 she moved to Custer and says the community loves their hospital. “The community is very passionate about their physicians. Here the nursing team feels just as strongly about the patients. Fulfilling is how I describe it.” Debra Risser, Nurse Manager, Monument Health Custer Hospital.

Custer is in western South Dakota, serving patients in a five-state region. The healthcare team is a mix of new and seasoned staff. “Some of my staff have been here for almost 30 years but I also have a lot of new faces in the nursing team.  This team is not burnt out, they still care, they are highly engaged. They do extra things for their patients and for each other.” Debra Risser, Nurse Manager, Monument Health Custer Hospital.
