Monument Health Custer Offering Job Opportunities and a Great Way of Life in Western South Dakota

Monument Health Custer Hospital and Clinic is a member facility featured in the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations, Hometown Healthcare hero campaign for the month of October. To help member facilities with workforce needs, SDAHO launched this storytelling campaign designed to recognize career opportunities and celebrate the people that work there and the communities they live.

The town of Custer is in Western South Dakota, nestled among pine tree forests and both state and national parks. The Monument Health Custer Hospital and Clinic serves Custer and a five-state region, giving healthcare professionals a wide range of patients to serve. James Woodhead is originally from Arizona but would often vacation in South Dakota, because his wife had family in the Rushmore State. James and his family recently relocated to Custer, and today he serves as the Director of Nursing with Monument Health Custer Hospital. “It’s a beautiful facility and it’s new within the last five years and there is so much collaboration between each department here. They all do a great job of taking care of the patients and the facility.” James Woodhead, Director of Nursing, Monument Health Custer Hospital

Custer has a population of just over 2,300 people, but in the warmer months – those numbers increase with visitors during the tourist seasons. “Custer is a very tight knit community. It’s a small town but it has a lot to offer for families from a hospital standpoint. This hospital is really a diamond in the rough for a small town.” James Woodhead, Director of Nursing, Monument Health Custer Hospital
